Volunteers Get "Smart" in Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County, CA has completed its local Registry Week, and the community is buzzing.
After cementing an innovative funding partnership with the EPA last month, the local Campaign team mobilized hundreds of volunteers to comb area streets block by block to identify their most vulnerable homeless neighbors.
In a Campaign first, the Santa Clara County team deployed a specialized mobile app, allowing volunteers to conduct Vulnerability Index surveys on their smartphones.
Using the new technology, volunteers surveyed more than 700 homeless individuals in the San Jose area and identified 271 of them as vulnerable and at elevated risk of death. One vulnerable individual reported having been homeless for 58 years.
